3rd Grade 1st Trimester Culminating Activities

Our 3rd grade ALPS students used their research skills to learn all about the Olympic Games and Olympians. On Monday(11/3), they presented their Power Point Presentations and then participated in their own Olympic events. Enjoy the video of their activities below.

School Board Recognizes Teachers and Students

Dunbar and ALPS students Taylor Cheatham, Itzany Mendez, Ramon Santos and Brian Varela are both science investigators and podcasters. Thanks to teachers Helen Rentz, Jordan Osinski and Joan Howell, as well as John Kain(Instructor Technology), these student podcasters had the opportunity to work with Dr.Biology in the ASU School of Life Sciences.

The students selected different topics to investigate including farms, desert plants, bird feathers and cancer. These students are winners of the first "Ask a Biologist" podcast contest, and they were chosen based on their vocal skills, curiosity and creativity by the panel of judges.

As director of technology integration and outreach in the ASU School of Life Sciences, Dr. Biology created "Ask a Biologist," the innovative K-12 children's science education Web site, to provide answers to the puzzled, perplexed and just plain curious. As its host Dr. Biology, a Web persona created by Charles Kazilek, he has interpreted more than 20,000 queries in the last 10year. Visit http://www.askabiologist.asu.edu to hear the podcasts.

Third Grade Team Building Activity

There were the Orange birds and the Brown birds that lived on separate islands (outlined with masking tape). The premise was that they eat different types of food and had consumed all of the food on their island and needed to fly (so to speak) to the other island, where there was more food for them to survive. Taylor joined Dr. Biology at ASU for the Ask a Biologist podcast. The topic was "Wickedly Cool Plants." Taylor was an excellent interviewer!

What did that dinosaur eat?

Our class is writing reports on our favorite dinosaurs. Each student selected a different dinosaur to work on. Ms. Cooper comes every Thursday to help us use the Laptop computers and SMART Notebook to record all of the information we find on each dinosaur. After AIMS, each student will share their report with the class using the SMART Board.

Meeting the Scientists at ASU

ALPS Students from Dunbar traveled to ASU as a part of their "Interview a Scientist" project. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students were selected to meet "Mr. Biology" at ASU. The students and their parents toured ASU science labs then participated in in recording an "Ask a Biologist" pod cast. The podcast will be available for downloading in the future. Each student received an Apple Ipod as a part of the project.
